KOHLER K-6228-C13-BGD Karbon Wall-Mount Kitchen Faucet with Gold Tube, Vibrant Brushed Gold Review

For starters, a quick comment on the color: my wife and I were pretty skittish of this brushed gold. We took a chance on it because of the great price we found it for (relatively speaking), and thankfully, it reads about the same as an antique brass finish.

I installed this faucet at a prep sink, and chose it specifically to double as a pot filler faucet for the gas range 4 inches away from the sink. With the faucet mounted such that it's aligned with the edge of the sink (so also 4" away from the range), it has enough swing to cover the better part of our 15x20 sink, and reach our tallest stock pot on the back corner burner of the range (the faucet is mounted 9 inches high off the counter).

Installation can be straightforward or tricky, depending on a few factors. But purchasers of this wall mount unit should be aware that you'll need to open the wall, and in the best case scenario add some carefully drilled blocking between studs prior to mounting the unit and soldering the connections. In my case, I needed the assembly to be exactly where a stud was, so this required the installation of a doubler stud before carving away at the one in the way, followed by cutting small holes for access for one of the water lines. Also, if you're installing in a 2x4 exterior-facing wall, the valve assembly and blocking leave scant room for insulation, so consider your area's need for winter freeze protection.

The question of reversing the installation has popped up on some web forums I've searched, never with a satisfactory answer. All photos and videos I've found show the faucet on the left, controls on the right. I emailed Kohler, and they actually phoned me back to say, "yes, I may flip-flop the installation." Turns out this is addressed in the current installation instructions downloadable from their website, but wasn't covered in previous editions (including the printed instructions I received with my faucet). So let me share what I found:

* The mixer valve body and spout body (collectively referred to as the "mixer valve assembly" are brazed together with a fixed piece of brass tube. So make no mistake, the control and the spout are exactly 6 inches apart.
* When mounted flip-flopped, the hot will be plumbed to the side of the faucet labeled "Cold." You may remove the handle so that pushing the lever up turns on the water (like normal), or you may opt to leave it as is (pushing the handle down turns on the water).
* When drilling the blocking for the mixer valve assembly, the two hole sizes called out are 1/16" larger in diameter than they need to be. I cut mine at 1-1/8" and 2-1/8" -- both common hole saw sizes that you'll probably already have in your tool box or will more easily find at the hardware store. I think Kohler specified the larger sizes to allow for more wiggle room in setting the valve horizontal, but if you're careful and exact (I cut mine on a drill press, and started with precisely drilled pilot holes), there'll be no issue.
* Soldering is required, since this is buried in the wall. No thread-on connections here.
* The mixer doesn't contain any stops, so you'll want to install some ball valves behind an access panel so the supply can be shut off to this faucet.

Kohler warns against use as a pot filler faucet, due to possible heat damage to the carbon construction. Frankly, I would have preferred the Karbon in brass, but in use this faucet is mounted four inches away from the edge of the range (and 9 inches above burner height), and the heat isn't really an issue.

One annoyance (something talked about in other reviews here and on the forums) is that once the nozzle is clicked over to "spray" mode, the water needs to be shut off for it to automatically revert to "stream."

As a wall mount fixture, this faucet is wonderful in a prep area, where the counter can be kept clean and dry -- none of that normal grossness that can occur around the base of a deck-mount faucet when water is allowed to collect around the gasket area of a cover plate. Despite the challenging installation (mine in particular required a bit of creativity), the mixer valve assembly feels solid and I trust will provide dependable service. Thankfully, the "guts" of the mixer valve are accessible from the front, so a cartridge rebuild will not require opening up the wall.

The high price tag is hard to ignore, but the wall-mount Karbon is truly a one-of-a-kind faucet that filled a very specific niche for us, so I'm just thankful that it was available. As usual, I'll update this review should we run into any problems with it down the road.
