Steelcase Details Dash Task Lamp - Freestanding Base, Arctic White Review

The Steelcase Dash is a phenomenal task light and value. I currently have two units operating in my home office, and I could not be more pleased with the results. I stumbled across these task lamps when I was seeking to add another Artemide Tolomeo (standard desk) to the office to improve task illumination.

First, what I was seeking to avoid: I love the industrial design of the Tolomeo, but the head of the lamp has a tendency to droop under the weight of the arm, head, and bulb, and the lamp is physically large and awkward; two nettles on an otherwise excellent product.

When I first came across the Dash, I was really impressed with the design of the product. Very minimalistic, very sleek, and built like an Abrams tank -- all signatures of a Norman Foster design. The lamp is physically about the size of an Artemide Tolomeo Mini, but seems much leaner due to the very thin lamp head (more about this in a minute). This is a stout lamp (much more so than the Tolomeo), and it simply exudes quality in touch and finish that you would expect from Steelcase. The lamp arm is actually fairly light, being made out of what appears to be shaped aluminum plate stock, and the base weighs nigh 10 lbs. This combination makes for easy placement on a desk as you can put the base somewhere on the periphery of the desk and really extend the arm and head over your work, and the lamp feels at all times solid, secure, and unyielding to tip-over. Need to adjust the placement of the arm and head? No problem; adjustment is practically effortless.

However, the real star of the lamp is the thin, unobtrusive lamp head. Lightly touch the electronic dimmer switch on the top center of the head and you are rewarded with an intensely bright light, and precisely the right warm color for work and reading purposes; right around 3700K. I cannot express how nice the light output on this lamp is for work-related efforts. Being completely LED based, the head barely gets warm and just sips electricity. Hold the button down, and you can dim or brighten the lamp to your satisfaction. The color of the lamp, I've found, significantly reduces eye strain, especially when I'm working late at night (unsure why, exactly, but simply that my eyes aren't as strained as they used to be with an incandescent lamp).

As I age, I find that I have a desire to purchase and use products with very lean, clean, and sparse design, excellent ergonomics, and only the highest level of "solid quality" that I can afford. My expectation of the Steelcase Dash was very high, especially given the somewhat steep price for the product. After nearly six months of continuous use, I truly think I have found the PERFECT task lighting and simply could not be more pleased with this product.

Steelcase, you hit a home run with the Dash! If I could give this lamp ten stars, I would.
