KitchenAid KGRS505XWH Architect II 30" White Gas Sealed Burner Double Oven Range - Convection Review

I'm a huge fan of KitchenAid. I cook *a lot*, I have subscriptions to just about every food magazine out there, and have my own cooking blog. I love my stand mixer, food processor, hand mixer, etc, etc. And I love this range! The 5th burner is great, the convection feature is incredible and their advertising for "even heat" is very effective. I can't say enough about the convection feature, I made great chicken wings in what felt like a fraction of the time vs. a regular oven, and you really can bake 2 trays of cookies at once with no negative effect on the end product.

What I'm less happy about is the fact that this stove cannot be used in the event of a power outage, or blackout, such as the one we had for 8 days this past week due to Hurricane Sandy. I'd gone through Twitter, then 2 representatives at KitchenAid, and finally someone from an escalation team who called me back. That safety feature is mentioned nowhere in the customer use & care guide, and the first customer service rep I talked to said "well yes, it won't work with a power outage, did you turn the burner to high and use a long match?" To which I replied, "yes, I tried to light it manually, but the gas doesn't come on." He had to recall that in some models, a safety feature is built in, and then packed me up to his supervisor who he thought might be able to help (she was so nice!).

This last representative confirmed for me that there's there is A) no way to bypass the "safety feature" built into this product in the event of a power outage and B) nothing they can do to exchange this for one of the other models in their line that would be more useful in the event I need to cook and boil water in the event of a power outage. I appreciate that they checked with technicians and even an engineer, but am truly disappointed that I have no resolution to the issue. I would still recommend this product, but only if you live in an area where you don't anticipate power outages and/or have another stove or alternative means of cooking.
